STOP THE EXECUTION OF TRAVIS RUNNELS
The state of Texas plans to execute Travis Runnels on Wednesday, December 11, 2019 for the 2003 murder of Stanley Wiley.
Mr. Runnels' trial counsel failed to call a single witness or present any evidence on his behalf, despite the existence of extensive and compelling mitigation that could have provided the jury with a reason why Travis’ life should be spared.
Additionally, the State’s presentation of prison classification “expert” A.P. Merillat provided the jury with a patently false description of what Travis’ life would look like if he were sentenced to life rather than death – a life of relative freedom within the prison environment that would allow him access to both correctional staff and other inmates. Merillat’s false testimony misled jurors into believing that Travis would essentially be a free man within the confines of the prison if they sentenced him to life, and the only way to prevent him from causing future violence would be by sending him to death row.
The Catholic Church teaches that the death penalty is unacceptable in all cases because it is "an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person." (Catholic Catechism 2267)
We invite you to raise your voice in opposition to this execution by sending this prepared letter to the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles and urge them to commute Mr. Runnels' sentence.
