STOP THE EXECUTION OF LARRY SWEARINGEN
The state of Texas plans to execute Larry Swearingen on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 for the 1998 kidnapping, rape, and murder of 19-year old Melissa Trotter.
Mr. Swearingen has steadfastly maintained his innocence of the murder of Ms.Trotter. Larry Swearingen was convicted on the basis of circumstantial evidence and forensic experts have provided statements and testimony that supports Mr. Swearingen's claim of innocence. The medical examiner who conducted an autopsy on Melissa Trotter later changed her opinion about the time of Ms. Trotter's death. Under her revised timeline, Larry Swearingen could not have committed the murder as he was in police custody on unrelated charges.
Over the years Larry Swearingen's attorneys have filed numerous appeals seeking DNA testing of items from the crime scene. According to The Intercept’s Jordan Smith, “While the state’s case against him was built on circumstantial evidence, there was also a trove of physical evidence that prosecutors seemingly either ignored or dismissed.”
We invite you to voice your opposition to this execution and demand that the state of Texas respect the dignity of human life by sending this prepared letter.
