STOP THE EXECUTION OF RUBEN GUTIERREZ
Background: On Tuesday, June 16, the state of Texas plans to execute Ruben Gutierrez for the 1998 murder of 85-year-old Escolastica Harrison.
If carried out, Mr. Gutierrez's execution will be the second since COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic in March 2020.
On Friday, June 12, 2020, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals lifted the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas’s stay of execution of Ruben Gutierrez that was granted to him Tuesday, June 9, 2020.
This stay motion followed a Memorandum and Order issued by the court June 2, 2020 that agreed to review two of Mr. Gutierrez’s claims, including his decade-long pursuit of DNA testing and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice’s denial of a Christian chaplain’s presence during his execution.
Mr. Gutierrez has asked for DNA testing for years, but for reasons not fully explained, his request has not been granted. Mr. Gutierrez has always maintained that he did not kill Ms. Harrison.
We invite you to voice your opposition to this execution and demand that the state of Texas respect the dignity of human life by sending this prepared letter.
